Dear Former Ty Cobb Scholarship Recipient: The late Tyrus R. Cobb established the Ty Cobb Educational Foundation almost 50 years ago for the purpose of assisting capable and deserving residents of Georgia in completing their college education. Since that small beginning in 1953, the Foundation has awarded funds exceeding $10 million to Georgia students attending an accredited college or university full time. Scholarships are granted to undergraduate students beyond the freshman year and to students pursuing degrees in medicine and dentistry. One of major league baseball's greatest stars of his time, Ty Cobb established the Foundation because he knew the value of a good education. A native of Royston, Georgia, he designated that all scholarship recipients be Georgia residents, but realized that these students could obtain a quality education at colleges and universities in Georgia and other states. Through the years, all scholarships are granted without subsequent obligation of the student to the Foundation. However, former recipients and others have been encouraged to make contributions to the Ty Cobb Educational Foundation when circumstances permit. Proceeds from the Ty Cobb fund have provided members of the Board with an opportunity to award scholarships to a great number of students. Last year 248 students received awards in the amount of $564,000. And, while these numbers are significant, we are forced to turn away qualified students each year. We see the need to do more.
